Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bedford Community Composting Corporation?

The Bedford Community Composting Corporation is a local organization dedicated to helping our community reduce food waste and support sustainable practices through composting.

Why should I compost?

Composting reduces landfill waste, cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions, and creates nutrient-rich soil for gardening and agriculture. It’s an easy way to help the planet from home.

Who can participate?

All residents and businesses in the Bedford area are welcome to join our composting program. Whether you're a homeowner, renter, school, or restaurant, we have a solution for you.

How do I get started?

You can get started by signing up on our website. We’ll provide you with a compost bin and instructions on what you can and cannot compost. We offer weekly or bi-weekly pickup options.

What items can be composted?

You can compost:

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps

  • Coffee grounds and filters

  • Eggshells

  • Tea bags (without staples)

  • Yard trimmings

  • Paper towels and napkins (unbleached)

Please don’t compost:

  • Meat or dairy

  • Greasy or oily foods

  • Plastic, glass, or metal

  • Pet waste

How is the compost collected?

We offer curbside pickup service. Just leave your compost bin out on your designated pickup day, and we’ll take care of the rest.

What happens to the compost after pickup?

Your compost is brought to a local composting facility (aka Luke’s house) where it is processed into nutrient-rich soil. This finished compost is used for local farms, community gardens, and landscaping projects.

Is there a fee to join?

No! The Bedford Community Composting Corporation is a not-for-profit organization whose sole goal is to improve the environmental strength of Bedford, New York.
